The Band Toto Asia
Toto was expanding production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. Toto saw North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, in contrast to its "base" markets of Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto documented Toto words so that the next generation could understand the words. Many words were substituted with foreign words. For example dui, which was Bengali for verandah was being used.
Origins
Toto's early history that began in 1917, was a reflection of Japan's economic expansion. In the first half of its existence, the company made products to meet the demands of new, modern urban housing. To achieve this, it used the first tunnel kiln in the country to produce ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and a more consistent production.
In the latter half of the 1980s, the company began to expand overseas in order to benefit from sales and new markets. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy boosted sales and expanded the firm's market share.
In the late 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of household appliances that use water. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and to increase profits. The company implemented a just-in-time approach to managing its supply chain and used the same methodology in its sales program. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continues to invent with regard to toilet technology. The latest toilet, for instance it has a powerful tornado flush that is more eco friendly than conventional toilets. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. Apart from toilets, Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than conventional models.
The company's first museum opened in the year 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's seminal products and their evolution, its group companies (all related to ceramics) and the history of plumbing and products like bath units, and in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum houses a bathroom with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed sessions with various musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich, guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather as well as drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group however it's actually a relatively straightforward rock band. The band began as a four-piece and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. But even though the band have a variety of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a massive blockbuster, but it was not without its problems. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver the top single or they would rescind the album. Toto was able achieve this through the aid of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their previous experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album begins hard with songs like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to write fantastic AOR tunes that slowly creep into your head. The album also features slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song which combines folk and distorted AOR and should sound totally wrong, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes changed for the worse. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album to feature the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than earlier efforts.
After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live concert which was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed just a few months later and the band embarked on an extensive world tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album that did not contain one single track titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility of restructuring the band. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was later referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
